Drawing glyphs

Click a character to open it in a glyph editor. ⌘-click opens a second one, so you can draw two characters side by side.

Tools

PencilBDraws pixels. [ and ] change the tip. ⇧-click draws a line from the last pixel.
EraserERemoves pixels. Hold ⌃ to erase through every layer.
MarqueeMSelects pixels. ⇧ adds to the selection and ⌥ takes away.
ArrowVMoves layers and linked designs. ⌥-drag duplicates.
HandHPans. Hold Space to pan with any tool.

Arrow keys nudge the drawing and its spacing together. With ⇧, or with Ink only ticked in the Edit tab, they nudge the drawing on its own. With ⌥ they nudge every layer, and with ⌘ they push the layer flush to that edge of the cell. ⇧H and ⇧V flip it, and ⇧R rotates it; add ⌥ to flip or rotate every layer.

Layers

A glyph can have layers. A pixel layer contains pixels you've drawn. A linked layer shows another glyph or a component, and changes when that changes. ⇧N adds a pixel layer and ⌘E merges a layer down. See Linked glyphs and components.

The glyph's tabs

The glyph editor's tabs contain the rest: Edit for its name, bounds, advance and OpenType features, Layers, Kern, Placement and Info. A monospace module other than Han has no Kern or Placement tab. ⌘-click a tab to open it in a new pane beside the current one, so two show at once, and drag a tab to move its pane. Han characters add two more. Related lists variant forms and characters that share parts with this one, and Dictionary looks the character up in the 漢典 zdic dictionary while the tab is open, with stroke order and regional forms.

Press R to mark a glyph as reviewed. To check the font as a whole, open the Review panel, which reports what's missing, out of position or out of bounds (see Previewing and specimens).
