Terms and Privacy
These terms cover your use of Pteropixel, the records we keep about you and what happens to your work. You accept them when you set up Pteropixel.
Last updated 19 October 2026.
Records we keep about you
If you work in a folder on your computer without signing in, we keep no record of you. When you sign in, we keep a record of:
- your email addresses: the one you sign in with, and any you give us and confirm with a code we email to it. You can sign in by email with any of them, and we send notices to one
- when you signed in, and the country or region you signed in from
- the username, first name and last name you give your account
- your workspaces in cloud storage or GitHub: the name and icon you give each one, and where it keeps its work. A folder's name and icon are kept in the folder
- if you sign in with GitHub: your GitHub username, display name and profile picture, and the email addresses GitHub shares with us (your account's primary address and the public one on your profile)
We use this to run the service and to suspend accounts that abuse it. You can see your own sign-in history in Settings, so you can spot access you don't recognise. Each sign-in is deleted after a year.
We use your email address for things that affect your account or the service, such as a security incident, a change to these terms or the service closing. We send news about Pteropixel only if you ask for it in Settings, and every one has a link to stop them. We never give your address to anyone else.
We don't record your IP address. Our host works out the country or region from your connection, and we keep only that.
Your work
What you make is yours, and we claim no rights over it. You choose where it's kept when you set up Pteropixel, and your settings (your own themes and screens) are kept with it.
- A folder on your computer. Your work stays there, and never reaches us. Keep the folder in Dropbox, iCloud Drive or another cloud folder of your own to have it backed up. If you sign in and link the folder to cloud storage, in Settings, under Workspace, the documents you choose to sync are kept in cloud storage too, as below.
- Cloud storage. We keep your work and its version history in MongoDB Atlas and Cloudflare R2, in the EU. It is encrypted on their disks, but we hold the keys, so it isn't private from us: our admins can open it, and do so only with your consent or when the law requires it. It has no backups yet; you can download all of it as zip files, or copy it to a folder, from Settings, under Workspace. An account keeps its work here unless it connected a GitHub repository before 15 October 2026.
- Your own GitHub repository, if you had connected to GitHub. New connections to GitHub stopped on 15 October 2026; work already kept in a repository stays there until you move it. Your work passes through our servers when you open, save or export it, but we don't keep copies. A document you opened recently may stay in a server's memory for a short while, never on disk. Uninstall the Pteropixel app from your GitHub account and we can no longer reach your repository.
A read-only link you make to a document shows it to anyone who has the link, until you turn it off.
When a document kept in cloud storage or a connected repository is open, it joins a live session on Cloudflare, in the EU, so that two tabs, two computers, or people sharing a workspace see each other and each other's changes as they happen. Who is there (a name and a small copy of their picture), where they point and what they select, and the changes as they're made pass through it. It keeps the latest changes while anyone has the document open, never the document itself, and forgets them when the last person leaves. A document in a folder of its own never joins one. Changes to your settings pass through a live session of their own in the same way, so your other computers see them at once; it keeps nothing.
Analytics
When you're signed in with GitHub, we keep a record of which features you use, such as creating a font, or exporting one and how many glyphs it had, and how many fonts and artworks you have. These records are linked to your account, so we can see what each person uses as well as the totals. We use them to decide what is worth working on. They never include the content of your work.
Who handles data for us
Vercel hosts Pteropixel, and MongoDB Atlas holds the records described above. Work kept in cloud storage is held by MongoDB Atlas and Cloudflare R2, and its live sessions run on Cloudflare; work kept in a repository, by GitHub. Vercel sees your IP address when your browser connects, as any host does, and handles it under its own privacy policy; we don't copy it into our records.
Their privacy policies: Vercel, MongoDB, Cloudflare and GitHub.
AI features
AI features are off until you turn them on in Settings. When you use an AI feature, such as generating example text for font previews, what you ask for is sent to the provider you choose in Settings: Anthropic, handled under its privacy policy, or OpenRouter, handled under its privacy policy and passed on to one of the companies that run the model you pick. Your API keys are kept in your browser, and requests made with them go straight from your browser to the provider. The keys are never sent to our servers.
Robot, the assistant in the apps, can search and read the web. Those searches are run by your provider (Anthropic or OpenRouter), with your key, and never pass through our servers. Pictures Robot finds, and pictures you link into an artwork by their address, are fetched from their sites through our servers so the apps can draw them; we don't keep them, and an artwork stores only the picture's address and where it came from. When you ask Robot to keep a copy of one with your work, it's saved among that document's files, like a file you add yourself, with a note of where it came from. When Robot searches an open collection (Wikimedia Commons, Openverse, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum or the Internet Archive), your browser asks that collection directly. Pictures found through Openverse are found with Openverse, which doesn't endorse or certify Pteropixel.
Cookies
We use only essential cookies, and only once you start setting up Pteropixel: accepting them is the first step. One holds your session, which keeps you signed in, and the other remembers your colour theme so the apps open in the right colours. The homepage, the docs and the demos set no cookies. There are no advertising or tracking cookies, and no third-party analytics. If you choose a language at the foot of the homepage or in Settings, your browser keeps that choice for the next visit; it is never sent to us.
Your rights
We keep these records because we have a legitimate interest in running the service, stopping abuse and deciding what to work on. You can ask for a copy of them, have them corrected, or object to how we use them, by emailing us.
You can delete your account yourself, in Settings, under Account. That deletes, at once and for good, the records above, the record of which features you used, and any work you keep in cloud storage, with its version history and the links you made to share it. Every device signed in to the account is signed out, and we send one last email to your address saying it's done, before the address goes too. Work in a folder on your computer isn't touched. Nor is your GitHub repository: uninstall the Pteropixel app from your GitHub account to stop us reaching it. For 31 days we keep a note of the account's id and when it was deleted, so a device that was still signed in can't bring the account back.
Using Pteropixel
You're responsible for what you make and store with Pteropixel. Don't use it to break the law, to infringe anyone else's rights, or to attack or overload the service. We can suspend or close an account that does.
GitHub's own terms apply to your GitHub account and your repository.
What comes with the apps
The apps, and the fonts, icons, instruments and sounds that come with them, belong to us or to their owners.
All fonts provided in the apps are free to use in anything you make with them, including work you publish or sell. The font files themselves are licensed only for use inside the apps.
Beta, and no guarantees
Pteropixel is in beta. It is provided as it is, with no guarantee that it will work, stay available or keep your work safe. Cloud storage doesn't yet have backups of its own, so keep your own copies of work that matters: download it, or copy it to a folder of your own. If a save goes wrong, an earlier version can be restored from the version history. As far as the law allows, we aren't liable for any loss that comes from using Pteropixel. Nothing here limits the rights you have by law as a consumer.
Changes
We may change the apps, stop offering them, or change these terms. When the terms change, the date at the top of this page changes too, and using Pteropixel afterwards means you accept the new version. If we stop offering Pteropixel, we'll say so in advance where we can, so work kept in cloud storage can be downloaded first; work in a folder or in your repository stays there either way.
Law
These terms are governed by the law of Ireland.
